What is micro-needling dermapen?

Dermapen is used to apply micro-needling to the skin. With the damage it does, it stimulates the skin’s natural elastin and collagen production. Thus, damaged tissues in the skin are reactivated and repaired quickly.

This procedure is minimally-invasive, non-surgical skin rejuvenating technique that uses the dermapen micro needling , an automated medical device that contains multiple fine needles, to create microchannels in the skin for increased stimulation of circulation and natural collagen production in the treated area. This newly created collagen provides the skin with additional support and helps to improve the overall health and quality of the skin. This dermapen micro needling treatment helps tighten skin, improve scars, fine lines, and wrinkles, and aids the absorption of topical skin care products.

What are the benefits of a dermapen?

A dermapen is an effective way to remove acne scarring and imperfections on the skin, the biggest benefit is the improvement in overall skin tone and texture that comes about after the treatment, along with the minimised appearance of pores in the skin, reduced superficial wrinkles and reduced appearance of stretch marks.

Benefits of Micro-needling:

Stimulates collagen production
Safe for most skin types
Treats fine lines
Improves skin texture
Reduces the appearance of large pores
Enhances the effects of topical skin care products
Stimulates circulation
Improves overall health of skin

How does dermapen work?

Thanks to the Dermapen application, many microchannels are opened in the skin with vibrating needles and the skin’s own healing mechanisms are activated. At the same time, the mesotherapy solutions, hyarulonic acid, PRP or CGF applied to the region are easily absorbed through these channels so tissue is regenerated much faster and healthier.

A dermapen works through a method of puncturing the skin through a spring-loaded automated function, the dermapen uses microneedles to move up and down across the skin, puncturing small holes as it moves. The mechanism inside the dermapen causes the stimulation of healthy collagen and the small punctures in the skin to allow for nutrients to be absorbed into the deep layers of the skin. The dermapen process is fast and therefore doesn’t damage the dermal layers of the skin.

Is dermapen the same as microneedling?

Dermapen is a brand name for a microneedling tool.
Instead of the traditional microneedling roller which is essentially a wheel covered in microneedles, a dermapen is a handheld device designed to overcome all the issues of a traditional derma roller.
The dermapen offers adjustable depth so the treatment isn’t too deep in sensitive areas along with being fitted with surgical grade disposable needles for a patient’s safety.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatment sessions needed in order to achieve optimal results can vary from patient to patient depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals and the condition being treated. We typically recommend a series of three to six treatment sessions spaced approximately four to six weeks apart. Some patients may benefit from a single micro-needling treatment schedule once or twice a year to improve the health of the skin and enhance regular skincare regimen.

Common treatment areas:
Face
Neck
Décolleté
Abdomen
Arms
Hands
Legs

When will I see results?

Most patients experience a noticeable improvement in the tone and texture of their skin after a single micro-needling treatment. The full effects of this rejuvenation treatment usually development within a few weeks of your treatment session, with continued improvement in the quality of your skin as the new collagen develops for up to skin months following a treatment session.

Are there any side effects?

Some patients may experience some temporary side effects, including facial redness and tenderness in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. These side effects are typically mild and generally subside on its own within three to five days of a treatment session.

Hydra Roller | Popular Microneedling Tool

Derma rollers are powered by hand, rather than by electric motor, and are manually rolled across the surface of the skin to create micro channels that allow your skin’s trauma/healing response to be triggered, causing the skin to produce more collagen and elastin for a youthful, healthy appearance.

But the Hydra Roller takes it one step further than your standard derma roller, with its built in attached 8ml serum cartridge, allowing you to infuse your serum of choice directly into the microchannels as you roll… eliminating the need to prep your skin with serum before micro needling!

The hydra roller uses extremely fine titanium needles which gently penetrate the skin just enough to stimulate collagen and elastin production, which helps to result in smoother, firmer, healthier, and younger-looking skin and reduce the signs of aging.

Hydra Roller helps to stimulate collagen production and to increase the absorption of skincare products.

Apply hyaluronic acid (recommended for hydration – however any serum of your choice can be used at your discretion) into the attached 8ml serum cartridge. Be sure not to overll. Roll the derma roller back and forth about 4-5 times in each direction horizontally, vertically and diagonally, on the area you wish to treat Maintain a uniform speed and pressure for the best results.

Hydra Roller vs. Microneedling Pens

Hydra Rollers and microneedling pens are both microneedling tools. However, Hydra Rollers are a more innovative version of derma rollers. Instead of the usual handheld model of microneedling rollers, the roll with the needles is attached to a serum cartridge.

Before you use your Hydra Roller, you need to fill up the cartridge with your favorite serum. We recommend using hyaluronic acid to help with hydration, though you can opt to use any other serum. As you begin the microneedling process, the serum goes out through the roller. The serum then enters the microchannels created by the needles and infuses deeply into your skin. Ideally, you should practice weekly or bi-weekly use to achieve your skin goals.

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy because it uses your body’s natural response to damaged skin tissue. When the needles puncture your skin, it creates these tiny punctures called microchannels. These trigger your skin’s trauma response and it begins to heal itself through natural collagen and elastin production, which start skin tissue growth to naturally repair these small wounds.

Aside from healing these microchannels, the production of collagen and elastin also help to get rid of dead skin cells and produce more youthful, healthier ones. Skin tissue growth results in newer skin cells taking over dying skin cells that will be shed. Microneedling with longer needles reach the inner layer of skin to treat scars, wrinkles, brown spots, and pores, since these skin issues are caused by other factors.

Benefits of Microneedling

Minimal downtime. Microneedling done at home requires no downtime at all, while microneedling in a clinic may require a little downtime, depending on what the aesthetician recommends. Your skin may feel a little more sensitive after a microneedling session, but it’s normal. Just remember to apply sunscreen on your face when going out.
Improved absorption of topical products. If you’re doing at-home microneedling with a Hydra Roller, wait for a few hours before moving onto your skincare routine. Avoid using any chemical peels or products with active ingredients especially on the treated area that is fresh and sensitive as these can be harsh and damaging.
Reduce pore size. The microneedling process can help your enlarged pores look smaller. When the skin’s trauma response is activated, the areas around your pore plumps, resulting in smaller-looking pores.
Does not affect skin tone. Treatments like laser skin resurfacing are not recommended for people with darker skin because the heat can affect pigmentation and cause discoloration. Microneedling does not involve heat and can be used for people with all skin tones.
Firmer skin. Aside from healthier-looking skin, the additional collagen and elastin can make your skin firmer and more elastic. You can also see improvement in skin texture as well as dark spots.

Anti Back Flow Microneedling Pen | Electric Wireless Derma Pen 01
Derma Stamp Pen Microneedling Tool

What is a Derma Stamp Pen?
First of all, it’s important to understand why you should use a needling device. The simple answer to this is that you want your skin to look fresher and younger since it will fill in things like acne scars with collagen. The Derma Stamp Pen is a device that takes microneedling to the next step by allowing a professional to stamp your skin with the disposable “head.” Inside of the head there are several needles inside.
The Derma stamp pen can control the needles’ depth, which is an important factor in achieving the best possible result. Stamping causes less trauma to your epidermis since the derma roller produces larger holes. This means less pain and downtime for you.

How Needling Pen Helps Your Skin
Needling Pen causes micro-injuries to your skin’s epidermis. This tells your body to produce collagen to fix the area that’s been damaged. The result is that your skin is firmer, wrinkles are slightly improved and scarring will be noticeably different.
Another reason to consider Derma Stamp Pen treatments is that it helps your epidermis absorb products better as it heals. Regardless of what products you’re using, they’ll penetrate your skin more deeply, which means they’ll do their job better.

Here are some other things you should know about this treatment:
1. It will improve your dynamic wrinkles (those caused by repetitive movement), but it won’t completely remove them.
2. It will lessen other wrinkles, especially if you have multiple treatments.
3. It will only lighten your melasma (a patchy, brown discoloration) if you also use quality lightening products at the same time.
4. It will help fix any dents in your skin from scarring.
5. It will make your skin look somewhat tighter and younger.

What Derma Stamp Pen Treatment is like
You will need an appointment with a practitioner in your area. Initially, they will give you a consult in which they take photos with a special camera. They’re then instantly analyzed via computer so that reports are instantaneously produced. They use this information to explain to you what you should expect from the treatment.
At the beginning of a treatment the technician applies a topical ointment to numb your face for 20 to 30 minutes. Once your face is numb, the technician removes the ointment and applies a hyaluronic acid to your face to plump it up. Your technician will then start stamping your face, starting with your forehead. The technician places each stamp directly next to the other one to cover your whole face. The needle itself reaches 25mm deep on your forehead and somewhat deeper on your cheeks but you’ll barely feel it. When the DermaStamp reaches an area of scar tissue, you can feel it meeting some resistance. After the technician does your forehead, they will follow-up by doing your cheeks, nose and upper lip in that order.
Afterwards there will be a short downtime. For this reason, you’ll want to choose the best time to have it done. You definitely don’t want to have it done before a big event or when you want photographs taken. During the down time you’ll feel like you have a bad sunburn, which is typical of all cosmetic procedures of this nature, and you’ll be fairly red. Also, you may develop petechia (when small blood vessels burst underneath your skin) and have several small, red dots on different parts of your face for about a week.
You can’t wear makeup for 24 hours. Instead, be gentle with your skin for several days, hydrating it with products like hyaluronic acid. Wait until the third day to resume your skin care routine. Then about a month later you’ll notice that your scars aren’t as deep and that your wrinkles have lessened. Unfortunately, you won’t see much improvement in melasma or pore size.

Why You Should Do This Treatment Yourself
Since this procedure is mildly bloody, you can perform this procedure yourself. When a technician does the procedure for you, the blood isn’t seen, so you won’t have much to worry about. Nevertheless, if you’re squeamish you can have the treatment done at a clinic.

The Bottom Line
There are doctors’ offices throughout the U.S. that offer this procedure. Make sure whomever you choose is very knowledgeable and doesn’t try to push anything on you. Typically, the treatment costs between $300 and $700 per session. Keep in mind, you’ll probably need more than one session.
The procedure is quite simple. If you are not afraid of a little bleeding, you can purchase a derma stamp pen and definitely perform the treatment at home. You will get professional results without the hefty price tag! The price of derma stamp pen is only less than $100.

This is a scientifically indisputable fact!

Microneedling Treatment
When it comes to treating skin that has been damaged by acne scars, there are few methods as simple, direct and effective as microneedling. This little instrument has been used by people around the world to help heal scars and smooth out the skin without using any medications or products that may cause an allergic reaction. In fact, the micro-needle treatment is safe and effective for anyone to use as long as they follow proper instructions.

Microneedle treatment is also known as skin needling, collagen induction therapy, derma stamp pen, derma roller, dermarolling and microneedling. It has actually been in use for over 20 years, but the full effects where not fully realized by most people until recently.

In the past, topical creams were often used to rebuild the skin that had suffered from scars, blemishes and stretch marks, but the results have often been disappointing because while such topical products can smooth out skin, they do little to stimulate collagen production.

What is Microneedle Treatment?
Microneedle treatment can be performed using either a “derma roller” or the latest “derma stamp pen“. These are simple devices that uses tiny needles on a small roller or cartridge to penetrate the skin where wrinkle, acne scar or stretch mark appears.

The needles themselves are tiny and do not draw blood when used in the correct fashion. The user will generally feel a tiny prickling sensation from the derma rolling and the feeling will only last a short period of time and the same happens to derma pen. The derma pen is extremely safe to use.

How does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling uses what is known as collagen induction therapy, a process where the fine needles poke thousands of tiny holes into the skin. Micro needling pen will trigger collagen production by 1,000%. Collagen is what provides new skin its healthy appearance and with repeated therapies of derma roller or derma stamp pen, the new collagen will eventually fade wrinkles, scars and stretch marks. This form of micro needling pen treatment is considered highly effective, and many users reported noticeable improvements in just several treatments.

The tiny holes created by the needling process affects only the outer layer of the epidermis and will generally not be observable even under close inspection. When the needle penetrates the skin, derma pen micro needling will respond by producing tremendous amount of collagen. Thus, a skin remodeling process gets underway as the old blemishes, scar or stretch mark is now being rebuilt by an accumulation of new collagen. Skin imperfections will begin to fade within a matter of weeks after using micro needle derma pen.

How Fast does Skin Needling Work?
It will depend on in large part the depth, length, and severity of the scar, stretch mark or blemish that is being treated. Small, surface scarring along with light blemishes will start to fade rather quickly while deeper, longer scars or stretch marks will take more time. In some cases, you may start to see improvement after the third or fourth treatment while others may only take several weeks.

The best way to track the process is by taking photographs after every third or fourth treatment so that you can see the awesome effects of the derma stamp pen or derma roller system.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Collagen Induction Therapy
Collagen induction therapy is another widely used term of micro-needling. There are certainly many benefits to this type of treatment, but it also must be noted that it is not a “cure-all” for every type of wrinkle, scar, blemish or stretch mark. The treatment itself is rather simple and straightforward, but the the skin improvement will vary somewhat depending on the individual.

Side Effects and Recovery Time
You will experience mild redness and slight peeling of the skin. Redness will disappear after 24 to 72 hours. Mild skin peeling will occur several days after the treatment. The average recovery time is between 2 to 7 days depending on the aggressiveness of your procedure.

Skin Needling Derma Pen | Electric Derma Stamp Pen 01
Is Microneedling Pen Safe?

Microneedling pen is a process that people are generally becoming aware of. It has been in use for centuries but in different forms. The Chinese are especially famous for making use needles in various stress relief therapies and more. It is generally referred to as Skin needling. Other famous words used for this particular phenomenon includes Collagen induction therapy which is abbreviated as CIT.

How does Microneedling or Skin Needling Work?
The process of microneedling involves usage of a microneedle skin roller (derma roller or skin roller) or micro needling pen (derma stamp pen). They have needles with fine points. They are handheld, and many micro-needles are used in multiple numbers on surface of human skin. The length of needles present in these devices ranges from one mm to three mm. These needles are used for micro puncturing of the skin.

Only the layer on topmost region of the skin is penetrated by these needles. Needling of the skin is actually used for the activation of the natural healing process of the human skin. The process is basically dependent on the creation of collagen and elastin with the help of small punctures in the skin.

The small puncture wounds that are created on the skin stimulate tremendous collagen production in the topmost layer of the skin. These initiate breaking of old scar tissues or collagen fibers which exist directly beneath the surface of the human skin.

Blood clotting is created because of this process which in turn creates the right kind of environment needed for the formation of collagen and elastin. These two are the most important elements that are need by the skin in general for rejuvenation and reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, scars or even stretch marks.

Is Microneedle Treatment Painful?
The entire skin needling process appears somewhat drastic in general. This is not the case in reality as the entire approach is at a microscopic level. The trauma that is displayed on the outward skin is quite insignificant.

Microneedling with a dermaroller or derma stamp pen is not really painful. Many home users reported a mild prickling sensation during a procedure. If you are treating a severe skin conditions such as deep wrinkles and scars, then you might require a more aggressive treatment. Sometimes, the process makes use of numbing cream in order to numb the pores and skin.

This removes all of the discomfort in the entire treatment. Numbing creams ensure a rather painless experience involving mild tingling feelings. The skin needle therapy utilizing a derma roller or derma stamp pen can easily be performed on all type of skin and colors. Those with sensitive type of skin can also enjoy the benefits of this therapy.

Does Microneedling Work?
The therapy will leave people with wonderful skin. The skin will turn tighter and smoother apart from being thicker in just several treatments. Other amazing benefits include increase in the blood flow to the treated areas. As collagen steadily rebuild your skin tissue, scars are minimized, and a similar effect is displayed with the fine lines and wrinkles. The effect of moisturizers and serums is greatly enhanced due to the increase in absorption.

Benefits
Other amazing results include minimizing of stretch marks and visible reduction in hair loss. The entire process can be repeated after every six to eight weeks. The only requirement is healing of epidermis. The formation of collagen can be continued for a period of twelve months after the completion of one treatment!

Microneedling vs. Microdermabrasion: What’s the Difference?

One of the reasons your skin may look dull and appear older is because of the presence of dead and damaged skin cells. The best way to get rid of these skin cells is by exfoliation. There are plenty of exfoliation products in the market, but the two most popular cosmetic treatments for handling dead skin cells and promoting skin regeneration are microneedling and microdermabrasion. From the names alone, these procedures might sound similar, but they’re actually quite different from each other.

So what is the difference between microneedling and microdermabrasion? Microneedling uses needles to puncture the skin in order to create microscopic holes to trigger the skin’s collagen and elastin production for skin repair, while microdermabrasion uses a tool with a rough tip and a built-in vacuum to exfoliate the skin and collect the debris. While microneedling is used for treating deep wrinkles, stretch marks, and old scars, microdermabrasion is usually for exfoliating the skin and treating new and superficial scars.

Microneedling vs. Microdermabrasion

Both microneedling and microdermabrasion are skincare procedures that can help shed away dead skin cells and bring forward younger and healthier skin cells. Both procedures are suitable for all skin types and can be done at home, but for best results, patients should have theirs done by a professional.

Microneedling vs. Microdermabrasion: How These Work

Microneedling – also known as collagen induction therapy – uses your body’s natural response to skin trauma to get rid of dead skin cells. Thin surgical steel needles from a handheld device puncture microscopic holes on the skin surface. This triggers your skin to produce more collagen and elastin to begin repairing your skin. Combined with serums and your usual skincare routine, this can help get rid of dead skin cells and bring forward new skin cells that can give you more youthful skin.

The concept of microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is similar to sandpapering your skin. Microdermabrasion machines use a mechanical device with abrasive material at the tip to exfoliate your skin while a built-in vacuum sucks up the debris. Unlike microneedling procedures which take multiple sessions before you can see results, microdermabrasion shows instant results. However, you’ll have to have multiple sessions to keep removing the dead skin cells that build up on your face.

Pros and Cons

Microneedling and microdermabrasion have many advantages. However, it’s important to also consider the possible drawbacks.

Microneedling Microdermabrasion
Pros
Treats your face, body, and scalp. Microneedling can be used to address problems like dark spots on certain parts of your body. It is also used on the scalps of patients trying to improve hair growth.

Offers different levels of treatment. Microneedling uses needles of different lengths according to the skin condition. Needles longer than 2 mm can reach the epidermal layer of your skin and treat issues like wrinkles and stretch marks. For deeper procedures like treating deep scars, professionals use numbing cream to reduce the pain during the treatment.

Makes skincare products more effective. The microchannels make skincare products penetrate deeper layers of the skin, making it more effective as your skin absorbs more nutrients while it heals. Instant results. Unlike microneedling that takes more time and more sessions to produce visible results, microdermabrasion instantly removes dead skin cells, providing instantly smoother skin.

Quick procedure. One microdermabrasion treatment takes around 30 minutes. It is also minimally invasive, non-surgical, and virtually painless.

Can last up to 12 months. Microdermabrasion results can last up to 12 months. However, if you want to maintain brighter-looking skin, you should schedule more sessions every 2 to 3 months to constantly shed away dead skin cells.

Cons
Requires multiple sessions to produce visible results. Microneedling won’t have instant results like microdermabrasion provides. It can take weeks and multiple sessions to see visible changes in your skin’s appearance.

More expensive than microdermabrasion. Microneedling can cost between $200 to $700 per session. In comparison, the average cost of microdermabrasion sessions range from $100 to $250 per session.

More vulnerable to bacterial infection. The microchannels on the patient’s skin can be susceptible to bacterial infection if not handled carefully. This is why people suffering acne, psoriasis, cold sores, and eczema are not allowed to get microneedling until they are fully healed. Only addresses superficial scarring. Deeper scarring can be addressed with microneedling with longer needles. Microdermabrasion cannot treat deep acne scars as it cannot penetrate the deeper skin layers.

Scars must be less than 3 years old for microdermabrasion to work. After three years, untreated scars become deeply rooted into the skin and will require treatments like microneedling to penetrate those layers.

Age can affect the effectiveness of microdermabrasion. As people grow older, collagen production becomes much lower. This means it can be difficult for older patients to produce enough collagen to fill in depressed areas of the skin after one session.

Which Procedure Is Best for Certain Skin Conditions?

Microneedling and microdermabrasions similarly treat the skin by getting rid of dead skin cells and promoting healthy skin cell growth. Both are good options for those looking to treat the following conditions:

Acne scars (that are less than three years old)
Uneven skin tone
Uneven skin texture
Large pores
Brown spots and age spots
Fine lines

If your skin concerns are at a superficial layer and only involve the upper layers of your skin, microdermabrasion is the better solution, since it produces faster results. Aside from the ones mentioned above, it can also take on:

Sun spots or melasma
Age spots
Dull, tired-looking skin
Blackheads
Any other superficial scar
Microneedling can handle both superficial and deeper skin problems. However, since microdermabrasion produces faster results, it might be best to get microneedling for skin problems like:

Severe wrinkles
Stretch marks
Deeper and older acne scars
Other types of non-superficial scars
Loose, sagging skin

It’s important to note that everyone’s skin condition varies, so it’s best to talk to your dermatologist about which is the best option for your skin. Take into account your current skin condition, your desired results, and your pain threshold among other things, and discuss these with your dermatologist.

Aftercare Procedure

After both procedures, your skin can feel a little sensitive to the touch. For microdermabrasion, this is because the outer layer of dead skin cells has been removed and replaced by newer skin cells. For microneedling, the punctures are in the process of healing and the production of collagen to improve your skin’s composition.

Healing time can vary between patients. However, because both treatments are non-invasive procedures, both have minimal recovery time before you can resume with your daily habits.

Taking Care of Your Skin

Microneedling and microdermabrasion have similar care tips you should practice after your procedure.

Avoid touching your skin, especially with unclean hands to prevent bacterial skin infection. You can continue your usual skincare routine (or as advised by your doctor), but avoid certain types of skincare products, including:
Strong cleansers (your doctor may prescribe a gentle cleanser to use)
Moisturizers with perfume
Active skin care ingredients (ex. hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salicylic acid, retinol, etc.)
Avoid long baths, soaking your skin, swimming in pools, and excessive sweating.
Avoid excessive sun exposure. If you have to go outdoors, apply sunscreen to your treated skin.
Avoid wearing makeup while your skin heals.
In case of pain, you can use a cold compress or take over-the-counter painkillers.
Additional Treatments

Microneedling requires multiple treatments before you can see visible improvements in skin quality. Scheduling a treatment plan depends on the procedure and needle length used. Superficial procedures that use needles shorter than 2 millimeters can be scheduled every other week. Longer needles, on the other hand, should be scheduled months apart to prevent long-term skin damage.

Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, can provide visible results after one procedure. This can be good for up to one year before it may be necessary to undergo another treatment. However, dead skin cells will slowly accumulate on your face over time. To keep your skin looking radiant, you can schedule microdermabrasion treatments once every three months.

Microneedling and microdermabrasion get rid of older skin cells, promote skin regeneration, and bring out newer, more radiant skin cells that can enhance your appearance. Depending on what you’re trying to treat, both are good options that offer little to no downtime with fairly easy aftercare.

Microneedling vs. PRP: What’s the Better Solution for Healthier Skin?

Science and medicine are helping the cosmetics and skincare industry find ground-breaking ways to achieve healthier, younger-looking skin. Rather than artificial chemicals and harmful substances, there are now procedures and products that make use of natural ingredients and processes – including your own blood, or your skin’s trauma response. For instance, procedures such as microneedling and platelet-rich plasma or PRP injections have become extremely popular today for making the skin look healthier and more youthful.

So what’s the better solution for healthier skin? Microneedling and PRP injections are both beneficial to the skin when used separately, but are more effective when combined. Microneedling punctures the skin to trigger collagen and elastin production, which is then combined with plasma proteins from PRP injections to make the skin healthier and more youthful.

Microneedling vs. PRP

Microneedling and PRP injections are two different procedures available in aesthetic clinics and other dermatological facilities. They’re often associated together because of the presence of blood in both procedures: microneedling can draw blood under different circumstances, while PRP injections use substances drawn from blood.

How It Works

During a microneedling treatment or collagen induction therapy, thin needles from a microneedling device puncture microscopic injuries onto the surface of the patient’s skin. Under this cosmetic procedure, the puncturing triggers the skin’s natural response to trauma, which is to repair the skin tissue and increase collagen production in the affected area. This can help close up the microchannels in the skin while also nourishing it with collagen and elastin to make it firmer, healthier, and younger-looking.

How deep the needles go into the patient’s skin depends on the skin problem being addressed. Smaller needle lengths are enough to trigger elastin and collagen production for skin rejuvenation, while longer needles puncture deeper into the dermal layer and repair deeper skin issues.

PRP injections, on the other hand, is a fairly new procedure backed by numerous studies suggesting its many benefits to the skin. Each PRP injection consists of concentrated plasma extracted from the patient’s own blood, which is injected back into certain areas of their face. The extracted blood from the patient is processed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the other components of blood cells. This concentrated plasma filled with proteins is then injected into certain areas that have damaged tissues, where the plasma will help with cell growth. This process is needed for facial rejuvenation: making the face look healthier, firmer, and younger-looking.

Pros and Cons

Microneedling PRP Injections
Pros
Can Be Done at Home. Men and women interested in superficial microneedling can have it done at home instead of booking sessions at the clinic. This is only recommended for microneedling sessions that use needles less than 2 mm in length. More heavy-duty microneedling requiring longer lengths should be done in an aesthetic clinic.

Good for All Skin Colors. While other aesthetic procedures are limited to people with lighter skin tones due to possible skin discoloration for those with darker pigmentation, microneedling is safe for all skin types.

Covers a Wide Array of Cosmetic Concerns. Through different needle lengths and multiple treatments, microneedling can address plenty of skin concerns. This includes fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, surgical or other types of facial scars, sun-damaged skin, large pores, stretch marks, sagging skin, uneven skin tone, and dark spots. Used for Non-Cosmetic Medical Purposes. Aside from vampire facials, PRP injections are used to treat hair loss, muscle injuries, post-surgical repairs, and osteoarthritis.

Lower Risk of Allergic Reaction. The PRP injection is made from the patient’s own blood, so there’s a low chance of an allergic reaction when injected back into the body. This is in comparison to other serums or medications like hyaluronic acid, which others may be allergic to.

Build Tissue Naturally. Plasma contains proteins associated with tissue and cell repair. This can signal skin to build new cells around the injected area naturally.

Cons
Not for People with Certain Skin Conditions. Those who suffer from conditions like acne (or acne scarring that’s under treatment or still healing), eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea should seek treatment for their conditions first before getting microneedling done, as the bacteria can cause an infection. Those who are prone to slow wound healing are also discouraged.

Prone to Infection. The microchannels can be vulnerable to bacterial infections, especially if you’re microneedling at home without sterilizing your tools.

Sensitive Skin Post Procedure. While microneedling does require little to no downtime, you may feel certain side effects afterwards. Patients will need to avoid swimming and going out without applying sunscreen to the treated area until their skin fully heals. Pinkish Skin. After PRP injections, the patient’s skin will feel tender and will also have a pinkish hue to it for up to 48 hours.

Expensive. At-home microneedling will require microneedling devices with prices that range from $20 (for derma rollers) to upwards of $100 (microneedling pens). Microneedling sessions at a clinic can range from $200 to $700. PRP injections can start at $500 for one dose; for PRP injections with microneedling, prices can range between $1,000 to $1,500.

Not for Patients with Blood Conditions. Those with conditions like HIV, platelet and other blood disorders, or a chronic illness should not get this procedure as there could be complications related to the patients’ blood condition; the PRP injections may even worsen it.

Can Microneedling and PRP Injections Be Combined?

Yes! The process of combining microneedling with PRP injections are more commonly known as “vampire facials”. Many medical practitioners that offer this procedure believe PRP injections can enhance the effects of microneedling.

At the start of the session, the practitioner will extract blood from the patient and process it into PRP. They will then proceed with applying a numbing cream to the patient’s face before beginning with the microneedling procedure. Afterwards, instead of a serum, PRP is applied to these microchannels to be absorbed by the skin and enhance the repairing process. This can also speed up the healing time after the procedure.

Benefits of Microneedling with PRP

On their own, microneedling and PRP injections have their own benefits. But when combined, they have the following additional benefits.

Enhanced Healing for Facial Scars and Blemishes. A patient’s skin has a natural healing response which, combined with the cell and tissue regeneration properties of PRP, can help enhance your body’s healing and result in faster, more visible improvement.
Less Risk of Allergic Reaction. On its own, microneedling is often followed by applying a serum into the microchannels. However, some patients get allergic reactions from the serum. In comparison, PRP is made from the patient’s own blood. When handled carefully, the risk of a patient’s allergic reaction to their own PRP is low.
Decreased Downtime. Microneedling with PRP is exclusively done in aesthetic clinics, where microneedling sessions are done with more care and precision, and the tools used are accurate and more effective. While using longer needles in the clinic require more recovery time, PRP actually speeds up the healing process.Patients can start to see the effects of microneedling with PRP after a couple of weeks.

Microneedling and PRP injections have their own advantages on their own. When combined, you can achieve healthier skin at a faster rate thanks to the boost of plasma proteins working with the collagen and elastin produced to repair your skin.
